Top 10 beauty tips

Iwas bullied at school for having freckles and chicken legs. It still rings in my head: ‘Freckle Face, Chicken Legs’.  Her name was Phillippa. I can’t remember her surname. But if I did. I’d tell you. Being bullied for the way you look has infinite legacies and the strain of not letting the past define your ‘now’ requires meaningful and transformative thinking strategies.  And now?  Social media has given us a canvas to paint our lives through whichever eyes we choose.  We can choose to be who we want to be and how we want to look, but we need to remember that who we want to be, may change daily.   And that’s ok.  We have to be honest.  How we look, our feelings and emotions, how we have been treated, good news vs bad news and life events all play a part on how we project ourselves onto the world. Who we follow and how we filter through content overload needs adjusting too – drawing on specific resources and inspiration according to your daily needs.

But is it really #contentaddiciton? Are we so tethered to content that we stop living in the now?  OR is this ‘always on, always busy’ mindset, where we soak up bitesize chunks of relevant content just a clever way to #contentfilter.  Whatever the case, I believe that connections through honesty is where it all starts.  In this brave new world, we need brave new conversations.  We need authentic, meaningful exchanges where ideas are shared, problems are solved and people are accepted for who they want to be on any given day.  Trust is paramount and when I’m image coaching my clients or answering questions from followers they trust in my honesty.  I’m asked for my top 10 beauty tips constantly, so much so, I felt it was time to write a blog to share some of my tips and tricks. Here I discuss my incredible experience of dermal filler and profhilo with Elaine on Harley Street.

I’ve worked in fashion and beauty for 20 years, working at Estée Lauder, Clinique and Bobbi Brown, on brands like Calvin Klein, Chloe, Vera Wang, Balenaciaga, Marc Jacobs, with celebrities such as Sarah Jessica Parker and Gwen Stefani as well as being Fashion & Beauty Director at HELLO! Magazine for 5 years. I now run my own business CHARLOTTE LOVES, focusing on style and impact coaching, as a TV presenter, personal styling expert, lecturer for London College of Style & influencer, as well as key note speaker on Creating Impact at big corporations.   Here are my top 10 beauty tips:

  1. Dermal filler & profhilo, Harley Street.                  So, I turned 40 this year, my face was starting to sag, my sebum drying up, my collagen volume disappearing as if by the day.  I’m no stranger to self improvement and I actually believe in it because it’s empowering to grasp change and take control.

I’d tried a few things before, including botox, but it didn’t work for me.  The headaches were crippling, I felt like I lost my whole expression, I didn’t look like ‘me’ anymore and even struggled to complete my sentences without my usual crazy exaggerated eyebrow movement. Cue dermal filler and profhilo injections at with Elaine on Harley Street, London. I had dermal fillers which are hyaluronic acid based (Allergan Juvederm Vycross range – Volbella Volift Voluma) across my frown line (glabella) my laughter lines (nasolobial fold), the chin fold (labiomental crease) and on the corners of my mouth to soften my resting bitch face. Yes, I’m afraid ‘the grump’ as I call it, does get more pronounced with age.

The profhilo stimulates your natural collagen production and makes the skin appear more youthful and toned.  But let the before and after pictures speak for themselves.  At my reckoning, I think I look 5 years younger and way less grumpy…

The buzz words, ok while slightly naff, BUT they ring oh so true.

Beautiful.  Natural.  Healthy.

No-one can tell I’ve had work done…

AND my face is not frozen…bonus!

To make an appointment call on 020 7637 3088.  Elaine’s advice on how to achieve a natural, healthy look is outstanding and these filler treatments coupled with the CJ Skinhealth ‘at home’ active cleanse and enhance & protect cream products is a must.

CJ Skinhealth Active Cleanse 50ml, £18.

I have sensitive skin so I rarely change my skin care routine, but this Active Cleanse (make sure you cleanse twice) is really so effective to remove impurities – it cleanses so deep it’s reduced my clogged pores, particularly on my cheeks, with it’s mix of salicylic acid, glycerin and Vitamin C.  So smoothing I now wash my whole body in it.

CJ SkinHealth Enhance & Protect cream 50ml, £32.

The product development team tell me I only now need two face products, the Active Cleanse and this new Enhance & Protect Moisturiser.  I didn’t believe them, but I do now.  They have smashed about 5 products into this one cream; main ingredients being retinol, hyaluronic acid, DMAE, SPF 30, Hydrolysed Wheat Protein, Vitamin C and Vitamin E to name a few.  It has made my skin so supple and dewy, plus it doesn’t run into my eyes when I go on my runs… I’m hooked.  They are likely to get a full patent on these products due to unique innovation – so they’ve got it all sewn up if you ask me.

  1. Eye lash extensions.

The best of the best in natural lash extensions I visit Tarrian at Lashed in London.  I have hybrid extensions – which are a mix of classic and volume lashes. Tarrian expertly applies these synthetic ultra-fine lashes onto my individual lashes to ensure no damage and minimal fall out.  This type of Russian layering gives a really natural finish which lasts and lasts, meaning I only go for infills every 4 weeks.  Tarrian is based in her beauty rooms in Raynes Park. Book via or text her on 07916259159.

  1. Healthy Hair at Robert Kirby

They say your hair is 90% of the selfie.  Better treat it well then!  I go to Robert Kirby in Wimbledon.  He’s a bona fida A List celeb hairdresser but with totally affordable prices and the finest products from Danish brand ID  He gives me creamy blonde WITHOUT the bleach.  Say no more…he has revolutionised my hair health. Read my review and see all the before and after shots here on my hair blog.  Get booked in. Quote CHARLOTTE LOVES for 30% off your first appointment.  Click here to book. He has salons in Wimbledon and Balham. Book him before he books out.

  1. Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation, SPF 10. £33.50.

It’s no wonder this is the #1 best selling foundation in the UK.  The coverage is immense and lasts the day from 6am-midnight.  It includes SPF 10 and comes in 54 shades with 3 clever skin tones. C for cool (pinky undertones),  W for warm (yellow untertones) and N for neutral.  Go to the Estee Lauder Counter for your Double Wear shade diagnosis. I can’t recommend more highly.

  1. St Tropez Classic Bronzing Mousse, £18.50 (was £31.00).

The best in the business (and I’ve tried a LOT of fake tan as I don’t lie in the sun).  Apply with latex gloves, always.  No orange palm syndrome please.  I pop it on after exfoliating and showering at night, it develops and I wash it off in the morning! And the best news, it fades gradually and you can still shave your legs without it getting patchy.  St Tropez I love you.

  1. Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs Lotion, in medium glow, £13.99 (now £9.33).

Literally does what is says on the tin.  Covers imperfections, quickly, in a wash off formula, BUT it doesn’t wash off in the rain, I promise.  I don’t have time to always use a developing tan, so the Sally Hansen Air Brush Legs Lotion is my go-to fail safe instant tan. It dries super quickly so you can get dressed after minutes.  I use it ALL OVER my body, including my arms and décolletage, it’s not just for my legs.  To make it last longer, I often mix it with Tom Ford leg shine spray for added dimension and sheen.

  1. NYX Highlight & Contour Pro Palette, £19.00.

The best pigments and shade choices in a contour palette I’ve found under £20.  Defines features beautifully with incredible lasting coverage. Thank you NYX.

  1. Rimmel ‘oh my gloss’ lip gloss in Purrr… Glossy Cat, £2.99.

6 hours of non-sticky, glorious shine! Great nude coverage. I have 3 on the go at any one point, can’t bear to be without it. OH MY GLOSS never leave me.

  1. Body Confidence at 40

I’ve never shied away from admitting to cosmetic surgery.  My blog details how I rebelled against lowering my expectations and how I dealt with the impact of not being able to accept my body the way it was. I needed to feel in control, when so much is out of control.  I WAS afraid of having surgery to my nose and breasts, but how supremely powerful to think of the thing you are afraid of doing, and doing it anyway.  My surgery story is here with all the before and after shots.

  1. Detox

It’s not just about what happens on the outside, but how you enhance your gut health by improving your nutrition…for the last 30 days I’ve reduced caffeine, cut out refined sugar, dairy, white rice/pasta and starchy carbs, as well as curtailing nearly all alcohol.

I’ve been on the Arbonne ‘30 days to healthy living’ detox plan. I bought the Special Value Pack with protein shake powder #1429 – includes Energy Fizz sticks to replace refined sugar snacks and caffeine, Body Cleanse drinks for healthy bowl movements used along side the Greens Balances powder which includes fibre, antioxidants, and phytonutrients, Digestion Plus with probiotics to improve digestive health, herbal drinks to replace caffeine.  My cravings for carbs and sugar have disappeared and I no longer crash and burn from carb and sugar come downs.  Click here to find out more.
